Biography
The young Polish bass Hubert Kowalczyk has been praised for his “powerful voice” (opernmagazin.de) and his “solid, dark bass” (onlinemerker.com). An ensemble member of Staatsoper Hamburg since 2021, he most recently gave his house debut as Nourabad in Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de perles at Opernhaus Zürich, as Zuniga/Carmen at Staatsoper Berlin, under Bertrand de Billy, and as Haly in Rossini’s L’italiana in Algeri at the Bregenzer Festspiele.

In 2023/24 Hubert Kowalczyk returns to Staatsoper Hamburg for role debuts as Polizeioffizier in Frank Castorf’s new production of Boris Godunov, 5. Jude in Dmitry Tcherniakov’s new production of Salomé, both conducted by Kent Nagano and Oroveso/Norma as well as Hausknecht and Sergeant/Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and reprise his roles as Dottore Grenvil/La Traviata, Don Bartolo/Le nozze di Figaro and Zuniga.

Other roles he has performed at Staatsoper Hamburg in the past seasons include 2.Geharnischter/Die Zauberflöte, Colline/La Bohème, Luther/Crespel in Les contes d’Hoffmann, Il Conte di Ceprano/Rigoletto, Pistola/Falstaff, Pietro/Simone Boccanegra, D’Obigny/La Traviata, Ein Hauptmann/Eugen Onegin, Alter Diener in a new production of Elektra by Dmitri Tcherniakov, Vollendeter Engel in a concert version of Schumann’s Faust-Szenen, and Markus in Samuel Penderbayne’s Unser kleines Scheisskaff – Fucking Åmål.
